Both marriages of Cesar and Barsini had ended tragically and I thought he was reluctant to try again. But he appeared to be still young and vigorous.


Doubtless some woman shared his seclusion on his island in the Adriatic unknown even to his son since he seldom went there.


Then I gave myself a mental shake.


In all probability I will never meet Cesar and Barsini again as his way of life was of no interest to me except that his proud Roman head and arrogant carriage had made a lasting impression on me.


Of more consequence was the son with whom to deal and who seemed determined to continue his acquaintanceship.


There was dancing at their hotel after dinner and he invited me to join him there.
