Command Sentences :
When we speak or write we use words. We make ourselves understood by using words in groups. The study of grammar is basically the study of how words behave in groups.
Look at the following groups of words.
The sun has risen.
My mother is a teacher.
I am learning englissh.
In the field
At 5 o’clock
To see him
So you find any difference between the first three groups of words and the other three? In the first three groups of words, each makes complete sense and can stand alone. They are sentences. The other three make some sences, but not complete sense. Theycannot stand on thier own. They are phrases.
A phrase is used as part of sentence. We might add some words to the above phrases so as to form senteces:
The cattle are grazing in the fileld.
The meeting is at 5o’clock.
She wanted to seek him.
A sentence is a group of words which makes complete sense. It can stand on its own.
A phrase is a group of words which makes some sense and cannot stand alone. It can be used a part of a larger unit that makes compelte sense.
Four Kinds of Sentences :
Sentences can do four different kinds of work.
Consider the following setences.
He has opened the door.
Have you opened the door?
Open the door.
How nosily he opens the door!
Sentence I makes a statement.
Such sentences are called Declarative Sentences.
Declarative Sentences are also called Statements.
Sentence 2 asks a question.
Such sentences are called Interrogative Sentences.
Interrogative Sentences are also called Question Sentences.
Sentence 3 gives a command.
Such sentences are called Imperative Sentences.
Imperative Sentences are also called Command Sentences.
Sentence 4 makes an exclamation.
Such senteces are called Exclamatory Sentences.
A written sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a ful stop, question mark or an exclamation mark according to the kind of work it does.
A declarative sentence ends with a full s top.
He is my teacher.
An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark.
Who are you?
An imperative sentence usually ends with a full stop.
Opne the door.
An exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark.
What is a beautiful girl she is!
