Sales Letters

Sales Letters :

A letter written with a view to promoting the sale of merchandise or service is known as Sales Letter or Sales Promotion Letter. The immediate object of these letters is to promote the sale of goods or services. The various sales letters contain various kinds of appeal.

The choice of appeal in a letter will depend on the character of the article for sale and upon the class of persons addressed. An appeal to the pride of possession may be made in letters to be sent to wealthy persons. Such an appeal is appropriate for articles like automobes, pianos, jewellery, etc. The vanity appeal would be useful in the case of articles of apparel such as suits and other sort of dresses, beauty aids, etc. The luxury appeal would be suitable for automobiles, high quality cigarettes and perfumes, etc. But the economy appeal is usually the strongest of all appeals for the upper and lower middle class people and also to the well to-do people.

Sometimes follow-up letters are also sent to boost up the prospects after the first sales letter has failed to produce the desired result. When a single sales letter yield no results, it is usual to follow it up by a series of sales letters, so that all the possibilities of selling the article may be explored. The theory behind the preparation of follow-up letters is that there is one special line of argument or reasoning or special method of approach suited to each class of individuals. If, for example the first two letters of a series have got no effect, the prospect may be induced to buy the article by the third letter, containing an appeal different from that contained in the first two.

Business is built up on the rocks of patience, persistence. One who wants to succeed in business must not lose hope when he is faced with initial failures. He should analyse the causes of failure and modify his strategy to eliminate the cause of failure. A knowledge of human Psychology is a sine qua non for success in business. A successful businessman, therefore, would alter his strategies and approaches according as the circumstances and individuals warrant. Success certainly comes to a businessman who never loses hope, but persists and perseveres. It is no less true far as the writing of sales and sales promotion letters is concerned.
