Special Verbs as Modals :
We have referred to verbs like IS, HAVE, WILL, CAN, MAY as special verbs.
Because they behave in a different way from other verbs.
Apart from their role in the formation of negatives, questions tags, these verbs can do other things too.
1. help to form tenses….
She is reading.
He has gone out.
They will come here.
2. help to make passive forms….
The gate is opened.
My pen was lost.
3. express permission, possibility, abilty…..
You may come in. (permission)
It might rain tonight. (Possibility)
He can speak five languages. (ability)
These verbs are, therefore, called Auxiliary Verbs or Auxiliaries (auxiliary = helping)
Auxiliaries are sometimes divided into two classes. The verbs BE (is, are, am, was and were), have (has, had) and do (does, did) are called Primary Auxiliaries.
The following auxiliaries are called Modal Auxiliaries or Modals.
Some grammarians treat all auxiliaries as Modals. All these verbs are indeed modals in that they are used to form moods or attitudes.
