The Art of Application Writing

The Art of Application Writing :

The most important letter that all of us have to write is an application for a post. Getting a job may be a matter of life and death for some of us and even for others a matter of considerable importance. We may seek a job immediately after coming our from school or college or after remaining unemployed for a few years. We may also apply for a post in order to better our prospects. The art of writing an application is essential for so many jobs and so it is necessary to give a great deal of thought to it. Some people do not know how to draft a good application for seeking an appointment. It requires the art of selling one’s services to the best advantage. One should learn the technique of writing an effective application.

The applications or any piece of writing for that matter is a kind of psychological link between the writer and the reader. It mirrors the psychological frame-work of the person writing it. An application reflects the job seeker’s mind and enables the potential employer to form an impression about him.

The first essential of any application is that it should either be neatly and tidily written, in a clear, legible hand or clearly typed. In applying for a job, it is often better to get your application typed. The language used should be simple and effective and not ornamental. Avoid hackneyed phrases or clichés. You must guard against any lapses in grammar, spelling and punctuation which would spoil chances of success. Sentences and paragraphs should be spaced well. The language is as much important as the facts. Don’t give any place to high-sounding hyperbolic words or phrases. Avoid all expressions of servility and flattery. For this, it is better to avoid the phrases and expressions like the following.

  • I beg to state…
  • I beg your leave to say…
  • I beg to remain…
  • Awaiting your favour…
  • Your obedient servant…
  • Esteemed favour…
  • Enclosed please find…
  • And oblige…
  • Hoping to hear from you soon….
