The Body of The Letter

Letter Writing Index

The Body of The Letter :

The Body is the chief part of the letter. It is begun on the line below the salutation. It is a mistake to begin it after the last word of the salutation.

The body of the letter may be generally divided into three main parts : the opening paragraph, the main contents and the ending. A good beginning is half the battle is very much true in letter writing. There are cut and dried letters that go into the subject matter at once. As may be expected of such letters, these hardly serve the purpose for which the same are written. The opening lines welcome the addressee to the topic under discussion. The greetings, the intention to write AND the cause to broach a particular theme are therefore essential ingredients before the writer fishes out the matter he has to convey to the addressee. If the subject is well introduced, mildly broken, subtly scanned out, the reader unknowingly may play to the tune of the writer.

The body of a letter should be adequately divided into neat paragraphs, intelligently formed to contain the subject in a systematic chain of ideas. The first rule, therefore, is to divide the thought process into independent sections so that the main points stand out prominently. In this it should be remembered that the rest of the matter also play a great part.

The introductory paragraph in a letter is the approach and then gradually the reader is made acquainted with the subject matter stage by stage. In the final stage, the letter ends with the usual concluding courtesies and civilities.
