The Date of The Business Letter

The Date of The Business Letter :

Since a business letter is an important document for the purpose of reference and has a legal value, it is necessary to write a date written on the right hand side of the letter. Just below the Heading.

In England, the usual method of indicating the date is to state In cardinal numbers such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., and follow it by the name of the month and year e,g., 10th April , 2008.

In the U.S.A. however it is customary to state the name of the month before the date and to give the date in cardinal numbers e.g. April 10, 2008. Some people omit the comma after the date and full stop after the year. But it is generally considered correct to use these stops. The following are the recognised abbreviations for months, January, February, March, April, August, September, October, and December, May, June and July are not abbreviated. Although such abbreviations are generally used in routine letters, it is better to write the name of the month in full. Similarly the year should always be written in full e.g. 2008 and not-as 08.
