Using Suffixes and Prefixes
You now know how a good English-English dictionary can teach you the meanings, uses and spellings of many words which are new to you.
There are also ways in which you can increase your vocabulary using English words which you already know.
This is done by taking the root word (the basic word) and adding one or more letters either in front of it or at the end of it to form a NEW word.
Sometimes the new word formed in this way has quite a different - or even the opposite - meaning from the root word.
A suffix is an addition to the end of a root word.
A prefix is an addition to the beginning of a word.
