What information you should and shouldn’t include in your resume?


There are basically four sections every resume must have.


  • Name and contact details

  • Education

  • Work history

  • Details regarding any additional skills or experience, training undertaken, computer skills, foreign languages spoken and professional associations you belong to


    If you have been out of work recently, any voluntary work done during this time should also be included. In India, name of father and date of birth are also included in the resume.


    Yours resume should contain only the factual information and not your own opinion. Whoever is reading your resume wants to see proof of these skills. So describe your skills by detailing your qualifications, responsibilities and achievements that is what you have actually done and when you did it. You will be asked what you think your strengths are at the interview stage.


    Hobbies and interests usually should not be included in the resume as these are mostly irrelevant to your tasks within the job.




    What is relevant information?


    This is a subjective question and depends upon the nature of the job and the views of the employer. Information that is important from the employer’s point of view is treated as relevant. If employer is particular about your experience in the same field then it is relevant. Some employers think that more experience makes a man more efficient. In such case, experience is more relevant. Usually employers are more interested in what you have done recently or are currently doing. For example, job description over 10 years ago (or approximately 5 jobs ago) does not need to be included at all. Simply state that details relating to this time frame can be provided on request.
