Writing The Perfect Resume

Writing The Perfect Resume : Don’ts & Do’s for Writing A Winning Resume.

Avoid inclusion of the following.

  • A resume title

  • Salary

  • Charts and graphs

  • Your weaknesses, if any

  • Reasons for leaving any previous job

  • Reference (can be submitted afterwards if asked for)

What should be the size of your resume?

The length of the resume usually is a matter of concern for the job-seekers as to what should be the size or length of the resume. Earlier the applicants followed the golden rule that the resume should not exceed one page. However, now-a-days the applicants have different opinions and they do not believe in the rule one page resume is the best. Moreover, there are conflicting advices from different books, institutes, hiring managers and other well wishers. This creates difficulty for the applicants. In this state of confusion, an applicant wants to know as to what should be the length of his resume and what can be left out of this resume. You need skills for writing the perfect resume.

Don’t be confused. Just use your common sense. If you are a fresher or have less than five year’s job history, a one page resume will be sufficient. And if you have more than five years of job history and a track record of accomplishments, you will need at least two pages to complete you resume.

Don’t make your resume your autobiography. Employers are flooded with resume submissions and are faced with the daunting task of weeding out the better from the good. The first step involves quickly skimming through resumes and eliminating candidates who are not qualified in first instance. Therefore, your resume should be able to pass the skim test. It is crucial that your important credentials need to be prominently displayed at the top the first page. If an CA degree is important for the position you are applying, your educational qualifications should be displayed prominently and not be buried at the end of a three page resume.

If your experience, skills or accomplishments are important from the point of view of the position you are applying, do display them prominently. It doesn’t mean that you reflect all your achievements on your resume. Display only those achievements that will help you get an interview.

The length of your resume should not be limited to one or two pages. It should be tailored according to the specific needs for that particular job and the employer. Ensure that the resume has only the relevant information and not stuffed with repeated information.
