Keep the following eight points in mind when writing your cover letters.
Address your cover letter to a specific person. This should be the person most likely to hire you. You can call the company where you wish to work and ask for the person's name.
Make sure you tell the employer exactly what job you are applying for and, if it was announced in the want ads or some other place, how you heard about it.
Let the employer see that you know something about the company (what the company does and how you can contribute).
Be enthusiastic in your letter without overdoing it.
Tell the employer about one outstanding quality you have and how it relates to the job you want. This could be in addition to what appears on your resume.
Be brief and businesslike. Be sure that your typed cover letter is picture-perfect with no errors.
Let employers know that you will contact them within several days. (A week after you send your letter and resume is usually a good amount of time.)
Do not send photocopies of your cover letters. You must send an original letter to each employer. The letter should be typed (word processed) on the same kind of paper as the resume.
