College Resume Template :
"I am assessing my next career step and working for your firm in a customer service capacity seems like a perfect choice. Here are some of the characteristics I can contribute to your company."
This cover letter (The candidate) has been caught in a downsizing. But that is not a statement she should make in her opening paragraph. Instead, she states why she is writing and provides an incentive to read her letter. She has done this by indicating an interest in taking the next step in a specific career-custorner service.
Harry had a job, but he wanted to move to another profession. This is the opening paragraph that Harry wrote:
"I am a successful small businessman with extensive ties in this community. At this point in my career, I am interested in utilizing my business sense, interpersonal skills and persuasive ability to become a stockbroker. I am certain that I could be a successful producer for Alan Green & Sons."
Harry presents the reader with two good reasons to take him seriously in the very first sentence (businessman; community ties). Then Harry specifies three characteristics that would make him an asset. The third sentence serves as a transition to the next paragraph.
There is no reason for Harry to mention his current job (store manager) or why he wants to leave his present situation. That information would serve only to lessen the incentive to read the rest of Harris letter.
The examples developed by the Job Search Club give us a good understanding of writing an opening paragraph that grabs the reader's attention. Let's take a look at some additional examples:
Part-time work. "As a local resident with proven computer skills, I am seeking a part-time position in your data processing department. Several of my neighbors work for your firm and have mentioned how work loads have increased recently. Perhaps my skills could help meet your current needs."
Recent news. "The article in the Local Ledger about Plushco Toys caught my attention. I noticed that you are developing a new line that is especially squeezable. My years of experience in soft material design may provide a good source of talent in those efforts. "
The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.
You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.
Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.
New material :
Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
