We have discussed how to write a good cover letter and how to utilize modular construction so that you can produce dozens of individualized letters from one prototype text. In addition, we have given examples of letters you might write in a variety of circumstances.

To make our presentation clear, we used a no-frills style of writing. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, you may want to write in a style that better reflects your own personality. To that end, this page will show you letters for a variety of situations written in a variety of styles. Please remember that these are samples, not models to be copied verbatim.

This website is designed to help you get a good job. A cover letter that adds value to your resume is an important part of your job-search effort. The importance of a cover letter grows in a tight economy. Dozens or even hundreds of people may apply for each good job opening. A cover letter that shows what you can do for the prospective employer and what motivates you to have an interest in a particular job can make you stand out above your competitors. We have shown how topresent yourself well to an employer even when you are not an obvious candidate for the job, based on past work experience. Your cover letter should be built around four key paragraphs.

An opening that describes why you are writing

A WHY YOU SHOULD INTERVIEW ME paragraph, which indicates skills you have that the employer needs and supports your statements with examples

A WHY I WANT TO WORK FOR YOU paragraph that explains your attraction to the job, the firm and/or industry

A closing that indicates you will initiate follow-up.

This is written for the thinking job-seeker. We emphasized quality cover letters and not mere letters of transmittal or amorphous pleas for a job. That is one reason for the chapters on research and networking. A thinking job-seeker also realizes that landing his or her next job interview will probably require more than one letter. How do you deal with the twin factors of quantity and quality? Our solution is modular construction based on a well-written prototype. Cover letters don't operate alone. For that reason, we included a chapter on making your letter a powerful partner with your resume. Of course, your letter needs to be sent to someone in particular, by name.

There is one factor we did not dwell on perseverance. Looking for a job can be emotionally draining. More often than not, your efforts will not result in an interview. The ultimate goal is getting a job you really want. Along the road, you are likely to experience disappointments. Those who give up the search will pay the price of an unsatisfactory job or no job at all. But those who persevere intelligently in the face of frustration will enjoy the fruits of satisfying employment.
