Cover Letters for Resumes Examples

Cover Letters for Resumes Examples : To illustrate how modular construction can work, Gabrielle revised her text to reflect a changed situation. In the letter, she is still applying to be a fmancial analyst, but this time Gabrielle is writing to a different firm in a different industry.

Moving to modular

We was satisfied that Gabrielle had a solid basis for what she had written for Dollarco and that it would make a good prototype for any cover letter dealing with fmancial analysis. Now we needed to see how a prototype text could be used for cover letters to many potential employers. We started with some alternate situations for Gabrielle to address.

Same industry - different firm

Most of my letter can remain as is. I would need two changes.

First paragraph :

The reference to praise in The Wan Street Journal is specific to Dollarco, so that has to be removed. I could replace it with a statement from my research about the leasing industry. More difficult, but not impossible, would be a statement from my research about each firm in particular.

Closing paragraph :

My sentence about the working environment is specific to Dollarco, so it has to be removed. I could replace it with a statement about each particular firm. If that proved too difficult, I could make a statement about enjoying the work environment leasing firrns often provide. That statement could be based on informational meetings, articles in the press or my part-time job with a leasing firm.

Different industry and firm - same type of job

I could combine the changes we just discussed with some changes to reflect a new industry. I can still use the same basic draft. After all, most of the letter is a function of the type of job I want, and that is staying the same.

Gabrielle is making an important point about prototype cover letters. Most of your letter revolves around one topic. For Gabrielle, it's the type of job. For someone else, it might be a certain industry, like hospitality or transportation. As long as your main topic is the same, you can use the same prototype for writing letters too many firms.

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
