The local library had a computer software package cailed SIGI Plus, a product of the Educational Testing Service located in Princeton - New Jersey. (If SIGI Plus is not available to you, a similar product may be found in your college or local library.) We hadn't used SIGI Plus before so we read the instruction brochure next to the computer. We noticed that the program was comprised of eight separate sections, each of which looked valuable. However, the most directly useful section for our current purpose was called SKILLS. We were pleased that SIGI Plus was easy to use and allowed us to proceed at our own pace.
The SKILLS section guides users in identifying what skills (the more inclusive term - positive characteristics) a particular occupation required, how that skill would be used in the profession and whether the user felt he had that skill.
This information could be obtained simply by inputting a three-digit code for that profession and following the step-by-step guidance of the SIGI Plus program. To work through market research and see what I can learn, we typed in the three-digit code for market research and found that the program summarized ahout 10 skills as being important in that field. One of these skills was making presentations. We wanted to learn more about that skill first because we enjoyed making presentations in our local civic organization. This is the information that came up on the SIGI Plus screen.

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.
Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.
Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.
New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
