Executive Resume Cover Letter

Executive Resume Cover Letter :

Earlier we saw how members of the Job Search Club researched a career, an industry and a particular firm. Then we followed the JSC as they drafted and discussed each of the four key paragraphs in a cover letter.

Now we will see how each of the members of the Job Search Club writes a cover letter s/he can use as a prototype for letters to many employers. Two JSC members will start from scratch, write a prototype and then individualize it by modular construction. We will see how six other prototypes were developed To help you find an approach that facilitates writing your own cover letters, the JSC members have used several different approaches for organizing their thoughts. In addition, we will avoid showing you cases of an obvious candidate - a person whose background so closely matches what a firm is seeking that she would be a strong candidate for an interview even without a good cover letter. My intent is to help you write cover letters that will obtain interviews even when you are not an obvious candidate.

You can benefit in three ways. First, you will see the process of putting together an entire letter. Second, the cover letters the JSC members write may serve as examples for your own letters. Third, you will see how to move from a prototype to a letter for a specific employer, a process you can repeat for hundreds of employers.

Starting to write

"I'm psyched," we announced at the next Job Search Club meeting. "Let's start writing."

"I'm glad you are so enthused," I told them, "but let's pause for a moment and do a little thinking." As the following story illustrates, it makes sense to do some planning berore you start writing.

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
