Executive Resume Samples :

"Your observations about the significance of employee morale, quoted on WCPN News, struck a chord with me. I, too, have been keenly aware of how intangibles such as morale affect the bottom line. I would like to meet with you to explore the possibility that my experience could be of benefit to your firm."

New geography. "I have been exploring growth firms like yours in the Seattle area because I will be settling there in the near future. My research indicates that Sonicboom, Inc., may be just the firm to utilize my experience in rapid-flight noise makers."

"I am interested in joining your firm's marketing department, particularly in a research capacity. My current employer also makes high-end impulse items, so Youree naturally came to mind as I planned my forthcoming move to San Antonio.'

Similar functions, new industry. "We met a few years ago at a technical writer's conference in Albany. I have recently been looking for possibilities for applying my skills in a growth industry, an area in which Fertilawnco is a shining exarnple. I wonder if we can meet to discuss opportunities for me to contribute to Fertilawnco. "

Similar industry, new function. "You and I share a professional history in the widget industry. Over the last year or so, I have been exploring the next step I want to take. I am convinced that the best way to apply my talents and interests to pursue a position in the production and distribution of widgets. In that connection, I would appreciate meeting with you personally."

Where are we now?

In this chapter, the Job Search Club learned how to write an opening paragraph that attracts the reader's interest by addressing the reader's professional needs in a succinct manner. We identified six helpful ideas for a good opening paragraph and the JSC members wrote a number of examples. We checked to make sure that each paragraph achieved at least these goals: elicited reader interest by explaining your purpose in writing; stated what motivates your interest; demonstrated your seriousness; and achieved brevity. In the next chapter, we will look at how your second paragraph tells the employer, "This is why you should interview me."

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
