In our example, Gabrielle was applying for a position as an underwriter in the insurance industry. Why did we pick this career?

There are many interesting careers in the insurance industry-for example, underwriter. However, the image of that industry is so negative that many people simply ignore it. That is shooting yourself in the foot. It is to your advantage to challenge your preconceived images about industries and careers when looking for a job.

A good underwriter needs to have positive characteristics that can be demonstrated, achieved or learned through many kinds of work experiences or fields of study. For that reason, it is an example of the many possible careers people ignore because "it's not what I have done before," or "it's not what I studied."

People often don't know what an underwriter is, does or enjoys. It pays to investigate a field you may not have considered before.

Some people confuse underwriting with undertaking. Ignoring a possibility because you don't understand it can be deadly.

Yes, if you are a recent graduate. It's one way to show that your interests didn't start just yesterday. For example, an accounting major, wanted to be an auditor, she could refer to "my academic studies in accounting."

This discussion identifies a good rule of thumb….Make sure you make a statement that is both true and credible about the particular firm and/or career. The range of what would be credible is fairly broad. However, it's better to say nothing than make a statement that lacks honesty or credibility.

Now that we had examined the principles involved, each JSC member wrote several opening paragraphs.

Here are a few of them….

"I am interested injoining Specialty Cereals, Inc., as a financial analyst. My interest in this area has developed in the course of my part-time job, as well as my academic studies in accounting. The qualifications I can offer yow company are ... "

This candidate is about to graduate from college with an accounting major. So she stresses her academic studies in the first paragraph because of the easily ide able connection between her studies and her career goal. This paragraph could be even stronger if she had indicated an interest in the company to which she is writing.

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
