How long should my resume be?

Employers rapidly sort through resumes in thirty seconds or less before selecting those that are worthy of a second look. As a result, a resume must communicate a candidate's most relevant qualifications in a succinct, easy-to-read format. This can typically be done in one to two pages.

Although there are no hard-and-fast rules, generally a job seeker with less than eight years of experience should stick to a one-page resume, whereas an individual with more than eight years of experience can add a second page. It is rarely necessary for a resume to be longer than two pages since most employers are only interested in the last ten to fifteen years of the candidate's achievements.

In a few fields, most notably academia, a resume-also referred to as a CV or curriculum vitae-can be much longer. This type of resume is typically a more exhaustive list of experience, presentations, publications, fellowships and so forth.

A good rule of thumb is that a resume should be as long as it needs to be to adequately match yourself to the position for which you are applying. The rule of keeping a resume to only one page could be broken if your experience and education merits more length.

For example, if you are trying to show how some former work experience prepares you for a position, then you need to determine an appropriate format that will allow you to include it on your resume. So, layout the work history section of your resume accordingly to allow for certain experiences to be included.

Please note, everyone has a difference work history. The resume of somebody who has worked in one position for twenty years will look drastically different from an entrylevel job seeker who has had six jobs in eight years. Try experimenting with different types of resumes, such as a functional or hybrid resume, to highlight your experience. Last, remember that the resume gets you the interview ... the interview gets you the job!

Your resume. needs to include enough information to pique the curiosity of the interviewer and help you qualify for the position, but not so much information that it is time-consuming and difficult to read.
