General Resume Cover Letter

General Resume Cover Letter :

In the following paragraph, Bill is linking his motivation to Manufacturco’s approach to operations. Note that he indicates an interest with both history (junior year in college) and continuity (18 months of research; initial attraction to field). 'This is a far more compelling approach than saying "I have always been interested in working for a firm like yours." This paragraph could be stronger if Bill indicated some knowledge of the general industry (electronics; appliances; textiles).

Bill should consider writing directly to Sally Greene if she still works for Manufacturco. If he does, he would change his first sentence: "Ms. Greene, it was you who first interested me in a career with Manufacturco ... " or "I first became interested in Manufacturco when you spoke in my class about... •.

Bill's draft

"My attraction to Manufacturco began when 1 was a junior in college. Ms. Sally Greene, your production supervisor, spoke to our class about ways to meet new efficiency standards in a relatively short period of time. I was impressed by the innovative approaches Manufacturco had introduced, which combined both worker and machine in the process. During the next 18 months, I researched various approaches to efficiency and discovered that your firm was frequently mentioned as a leader in decreasing costs without downsizing. Working for a company that makes a profit without discarding people is exactly what attracted me to industrial engineering in the first place."

Harry's opening line (following) presents a punchy introduction to the rest of the paragraph. But there is more to the paragraph than an appealing opening. Harry proceeds to explain his interest in the job, firm and industry. Further, Harry shows an understanding of a major event influencing the industry (growth in trade) and a particular attribute of the firm to which he is writing (expanding client base).

Harry's draft

"Working for Foremost Brothers appeals to me because it would be the right job in a great firm in a growing industry. Being a freight forwarder combines the talents I enjoy utilizing the most: organization, communication and business sense. With international trade expanding, the freight forwarding industry should have new opportunities for growth. In that context, your firm is especially attractive to me becase you have shown an ability to expand beyond a traditional group of clients."

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
