I was responsible for procuring the licence to set up a branch (November 1997) and establishing a branch of Bank Stanford in Mumbai. The branch began operations on April 2, 1998 and the bank broke even in
its very first month of operations. The bank's profit last year was Rs. 83 crores making it the most successful new foreign bank in India. This is significant given the fact that Bank Stanford is virtually unknown in

Identified and had the premises renovated and recruited all the staff.

Sourced clients both for assets and liabilities. We presently have advances (loans, discounted paper and overdrafts) of Rs 460 crore (Rs 4.6 billion) and client deposits of Rs 540 crore (Rs 5.4 billion).
Apart from commercial banking, I have been involved in merchant investment banking. I have been advising clients on the sourcing of capital and assisting them in the placement of debt.

My responsibilities included….
Formulation and implementation of the country strategy and policies working with other functional heads as a team, keeping the external environment and other internal requirements in mind….In December 1994 we were successful in developing a short-term strategy up to 1997 and a medium-term strategy up to 2000 for India. This was imperative on account of the sweeping changes taking place due to the liberalisation reforms initiated by the government.
Monitoring and communicating business plans, development and execution.
Preparing and overseeing the preparation of detailed project reports.
Participating in and implementing strategic projects. I prepared the bank's strategy for setting up a money market mutual fund and establishing itself as a foreign institutional investor.
Meeting clients to expand the bank's business, including advising clients on business-related matters like raising capital, managing their funds and determining their needs.
Being the liaison between the country head and all branches on routine in-policy and exception to policy matters.
Assisting in the administration of the bank in India.

During this assignment, my duties were as follows.
Sourcing new relationship clients and strengthening existing ties. During the four years I held this position, I increased advances by 320% to Rs 1,730 crore and deposits by 280% to Rs 2,063 crore.
Determining funding requirements of clients and assisting them in sourcing these through new issues, debt placements or loans. I handled IPOs aggregating Rs 30,000 crore.
Advising companies on managing their fmances.
Analysis of financials of companies, credit evaluations and presentation of credit proposals.

As the manager, I was responsible for the profitability and the entire operations of the branch. This included sourcing new clients, strengthening existing ties, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations of the branch, dealing with the labour union, man management and general administration.
On Special Training at Dallas - Texas--August 1986 to September 1987
During this period I attended an intensive management training programme at Dallas, Texas. I was one of the fifteen employees selected worldwide to attend the programme and was at the end adjudged the best participant. The course concentrated on the analysis of financial statements and on credit analysis.
Operations Manager - Bombay-February 1985 to August 1986
I was responsible for the entire operations of the branch and for its administration.
Relationship Officer - May 1983 to February 1985
In this position I was responsible for marketing the bank, sourcing new clients, strengthening existing relationships and credit appraisals. I was successful in sourcing three large accounts and was specially connnended by the Country Head as the Best Performer.
