How long should my resume be?
This is a loaded question. Most people have heard of the one page rule. When I see resumes
that are on one page written in 9 point font and less than one-half inch border, I know immediately that the writer is trying desperately to keep to the one page rule. I have never seen a resume on one page that does the writer justice. These one-pagers are so difficult to read that an employer will trash it immediately because he or she can't read the darn thing. And the writer has slaved over this resume all for naught. Appearance of the resume is important. Why? It is an advertisement of the job seeker and what he or she can do for the prospective employer. What does that mean? Like most advertisements it should be sharp, clean, pleasing to the eye readable and have lots of white space. A prospective reader should want to pick up the resume because it looks attractive, has bullets, clear descriptions of accomplishments and lots of applicable buzzwords.
Most screeners of resumes have difficulty reading a small font - reason number one for using a 12 point font. Even if sent electronically, most companies require a 10 to 12 point font for submission. White space, large enough font, buzzwords, content and organization all come into play. To do oneself justice with great samples of accomplishments the job seeker needs a resume that is more than one page.
