Resume Cover Letter Template : Letter-writing isn't an exact science, but I tried to put first the characteristic that would appeal most. In freight forwarding, the well-organized, tireless employee is a real asset and I have demonstrated those characteristics in the past.

How did you pick the positive characteristics you presented?

I am switching fields, so it is especially important to show positive characteristics that are important in both my current and anticipated fields. My research identified several characteristics needed by freight forwarders that I have certainly demonstrated or learned in the retail field.

Is there any particular reason for the order of your sentences?

Letter-writing isn't an exact science, but I tried to put first the characteristic that would appeal most. In freight forwarding, the well-organized, tireless employee is a real asset and I have demonstrated those characteristics in the past.

The sentences about inventory and pricing suggest I have some exposure to two pragmatic parts of the business.

The shipments you deal with now are mostly incoming. The freight forwarder arranges a lot of sending. Is this a good example?

It is certainly honest. My statement doesn't claim experience with outgoing shipping. The example should still be helpful to me because it deals with shipping, a function common to both my current and future careers.

A graduating industrial engineering student

"In the course of my engineering program, I have mastered mathematics, science and computer skills, in addition to engineering principles. Many of our class assignments were group projects from which I learned how to apply principles to practice. For example, my project on 'Nuts and Bolts Meets Flesh and Blood' addressed a key production problem in your industry. Through my leadership role in student government, I enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills."

He is demonstrating a good grasp of what he needs to show a prospective employer. In the case of a highly technical profession, it is a good idea to establish your technical ability early in the letter. It is also helpful to show how you have tiled your technical training in practice. Since he didn't have directly applicable work experience, he cited his class projects. True, applicable work experience would be the most powerful attraction. However, if you can't honestly refer to the most attractive experience, cite the most compelling you can offer. Notice how he mentioned group projects. Working well in a team is a major asset in his profession. Similarly, the communication and interpersonal skills he cites will be important to his employer.

This paragraph related a class project to the needs of a particular industry. He could make his letter even stronger if he links some of his skills to a specific service of the firm to which he is writing.
