Resume Cover Letter Writing : We consider ethics to be important in our job search. Do you consider your example for "analyzing" to be honest? You neglected to mention that it took place as part of a civic organization's project.

We consider ethics to be important in our job search. Do you consider your example for "analyzing" to be honest? You neglected to mention that it took place as part of a civic organization's project.

Yes, it is honest. Remember our rule: Everything you say in a job search must be true, but you don't have to say everything. I stated that I had utilized a skill, but said nothing about the setting. If the setting is important to the firm, they can decide to seek more details on the resume, not to interview me at all or ask me about it at the interview if there is one.

I notice that the points you mentioned are all generic to market research as a profession. Are there other points you might raise?

Yes, when it comes to writing to a specific firm I might include a statement about product knowledge, client familiarity and experience with firms of a similar size or other connections between what I offer and what they need.

When the members fmished their questions, I asked each of them to draft a "why you should interview me" paragraph of their own.

Harry was considering changing fields and had to think about showing the usefulness of his current profession, supermarket manager, to a new one. For the sake of this exercise, He decided to write to a freight forwarder. Drawing from his research on freight forwarding, He identified positive characteristics he had demonstrated, achieved or learned in his current career that would be useful in his next field. His paragraph appears below.

The members wanted to ask a few questions.

What purpose does your first sentence serve? It doesn't seem to give any particular reason to interview you.

The draft - second paragraph

"I am certain I can make a substantial contribution to your firm, just as I have for my current employer. For example, I have shown myself to be a highly organized professional who can juggle many projects simultaneously without succumbing to fatigue or stress. The large volume of products I deal with requires knowledge of interstate shipping procedure and the ability to schedule shipments effectively. In a highly competitive market, I have been able to establish pricing that yields a fair profit without losing customers. "

I had two reasons. First, I wanted a sentence to transition between paragraphs. Second, I wanted to make it clear that I am currently employed. Unfortunately, there is some skepticism about people who don't have a job, so I wanted to remove that skepticism as it might relate to me.
