The JSC will learn to write a good fourth paragraph, a closing that keeps the control of the job-search process in their own hands.

We had completed our sessions on the first three paragraphs of a cover letter and the Job Search Club was discussing the best way to close.

"Hire me!" Gabrielle joked, "'Then I won't have to write any more cover letters."

"At least read my cover letter," suggested Harry.

"Too much, and then too little," I offered. "Almost no one gets hired based on correspondence. On the other hand, if the employer just roads your correspondence, you won't really be satisfied. What you really want is to arrange a job interview."

"Okay," said Lauren joining ill. "But isn't that obvious? Why else would you be writing?"

“Not necessarily. The person receiving your letter gets all kinds of correspondence every day," I responded. "Besides, even when it is obvious, it pays to be explicit when you want your thoughts to be dear."

Sensing that we were ready, I asked each member to write a closing paragraph so we could test our principles in practice. David offered this:

David's draft closing The enclosed resume will give you more details about the skills I can bring to your firm. If you agree that I would be a good candidate, I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you personally to explore the possible contributions I can make to Happy Company. Thank you for your time and consideration."

This paragraph certainly reads smoothly, but I am still concerned. Couldn't you make it a little shorter? For example, the first sentence could be simply: "My resume is enclosed."

I am trying to get them interested in reading my resume.

If she or he isn't interested after the first three paragraphs, promising "more details" is probably not an inducement. Besides, you have missed the point of a resume. A good resume is not an accumulation of details; it's a presentation of the positive characteristics you have demonstrated, achieved or learned in some context, like a job or student club.

Don't try to win on the last pitch

It is correct. Some job-seekers try to achieve their objective in the last few sentences. But if the first three paragraphs were good, that isn't a necessary task [or the fourth. If they weren't good, an offer of more details on the resume isn't likely to help.

I tend to agree. But I am more concerned about your second sentence. It seems so passive. All you've said is that you would welcome the opportunity to meet with him or her. You could be a bit more assertive.

I see your point. But what do you suggest?

How about this: "Next week I will call you to see if a meeting can be arranged."

That seems a bit forward.

But it's not overly forward and it's certainly not rude.
