Older Worker :

Age should not be considered a major difficulty for those over forty who are seeking work. In firms with more than twenty employees, workers are protected by the age discrimination law. Older employees with more and broader experience and a greater understanding of the world of work also have an extra edge over younger workers. In preparing a resume, the older job hunter should emphasize maturity, skills and experience. Although it is illegal to ask questions about age, a resume without any dates suggests that there may be something to hide and may create the impression that the job seeker is older than he or she really is.

, All appropriate dates should be given. But you need not give age or birth date or year of graduation. Omit publication dates if articles were written several years ago. In short, omit any clues that will screen you out.

Do not list all positions held. Group early work history by type of positions held. Omit unrelated jobs and those held for short periods. Be careful not to leave any time gaps. The resume does not need to be an all-inclusive document. It should not make you look out of date, but it should concentrate on present skills and activities. Only the most recent jobs that will convince an employer of your desirability need be listed. This type of resume should present specific qualifications for the job for which you are applying.

Many counselors suggest a functional resume because it highlights strengths and talents to the best advantage. Whatever format is selected, it should follow the standard directions for good resume writing. It should stress qualifications and experience. It should state the facts truthfully. Above all, it should be positive and present you as an achiever.
