Sales Resumes Examples : My basic theme is that I am an experienced marketing professional who is ready to move up. To support that theme, I wanted to show some of my marketing accomplishments and some of the other skills I would need in product management.

My basic theme is that I am an experienced marketing professional who is ready to move up. To support that theme, I wanted to show some of my marketing accomplishments and some of the other skills I would need in product management.

To pursue that last point, the example you give for communication skills is taken from the nonprofessional sphere of your life. Did you have a reason?

Communication skills are very important for a product manager, but I really don't get to use them on my current job. My choice was to show a credible avocational context or not mention the talent. I chose the newspaper and the Chamber of Commerce because they are credible examples of an important positive characteristic. It was better to include an example that is strong but not the very strongest rather than ignore mentioning the skill completely.

Where did you come-up with the Yum-Yum Breakfast Club?

Remember, we want to draw a connection between ourselves and the prospective employer. An interest in their product is one way to do that. I included this point because it is useful. I placed it last because it is not central to my letter.

In your third paragraph, "why I want to work for you," you draw two connections to the firm (The Wall Street Journal article - medium-sized firm) but none to the job or the industry. What was your thinking?

It is important to use your own judgment when applying the job, firm, industry guideline Richard gave us for this paragraph. Mentioning my avocational interest in cereal in paragraph two addresses the industry aspect. Unfortunately, I haven't yet researched the business aspects of the cereal industry enough to make an intelligent statement about it. I had to make the most out of what I had available when it was time to write.

I see your point about the value of mentioning my motivation for product management. Perhaps I could have added a sentence like "My interest in product management sterns from my desire to combine my talents in research, communication and crganizing in the broader context that product management offers a marketing professional" or "I am interested in product management because it would be the next logical step in my marketing career."

After we reviewed Lauren's prototype letter, we were convinced that it was ready to be amended as needed for other letters. The JSC members gave Lauren a variety of situations to deal with.

Different company - same industry

Most of the letter can stay as it is. Obviously, the name of the firm changes in the first paragraph. In the third paragraph, I would either refer to my research about this firm or write a generic statement about my interest in the industry. If this firm is not medium-sized, a situation I mentioned in my prototype, I'd refer to my attraction to the firm's philosophy, track record or geography.

Would a generic statement about the industry be a substitute for your statement about the Yum-Yum Breakfast Club?

Only in terms of space utilization. That was an avocational statement showing a connection from the heart. My statements about the industry would be from a business perspective.
