Climbing the career ladder can be very difficult. Employers want their supervisors and managers to have the experience they need to do the job. If you want to move up the ladder into a management position, you have to write a resume that convinces an employer that you can do the job. It is very important to use action words to describe the skills you have. Many times you may also have to use numbers to impress an employer.
Ask yourself the following questions taking into consideration both your paid and your volunteer work experience.
Have I ever supervised other people in a work situation?
Was I responsible for handling or managing a budget?
Did I ever create a new procedure to use in my job or for my company?
Did I ever organize activities, meetings, meals or conferences for my company or organization?
Have I had any courses or other training that relates to the new position I want?
Have I been promoted at my company or have each of the jobs that I've had been better than the last?
Were you able to answer yes to these questions? Do you have the facts to back up your answers? If so, then you are probably ready to look for jobs that include supervision and management. Your resume should say that you have the skills you need even if your job titles do not. Make sure you emphasize your knowledge and ability to move into a higher position. You must also say in your cover letter that you are ready to move up and accept
the challenges and responsibilities of management.
