Business press : Magazines report on growing small businesses. In some issues, lists of firms that are the fastest something or potentially most something are given. Less well-known are regional business publications that cover small business and area economic conditions. Check with your local library or chamber of commerce for the names of specific publications of this kind that might be available to you.

One aspect of using the computer in your job search is job openings posted on computer bulletin boards. There are numerous bulletin boards, some of which are geographically or functionally specific. Most are available at no charge to the job seeker, A list of some prominent bulletin boards will be found at the end of this section.

In terms of your cover letter, how does that change things for you? It depends upon how you are asked to reply.

By conventional mail….. To use our baseball analogy, we're still playing on grass. It is no different than replying to a help-wanted ad in a newspaper. There is an advantage to you in that the job posting may be more current because electronic bulletin boards can be changed faster than newspapers.

Bye-mail….. The substance of your cover letter doesn't need to change based on the mode of delivery. However, there are some technical changes that we will deal with below.

The cover letter adds to your attractiveness as a candidate in three ways.

Highlighting : You can give those positive characteristics of greatest interest to a particular employer more prominence in the cover letter than you did in your resume.

Reframing : Through your cover letter, you can put some of your experiences in a frame of reference that more closely meets the needs of the employer.

New material : Your cover letter can include material of interest to an employer that would be difficult to present in a resume. Your motivation for wanting to work for that particular company is an example.
